At Spiny.ai, the data team is its own department and doesn’t not only support the other teams. The data team is integral to the development of our product and directly impacting the business. We work with text, social media, marketing, advertising, and customer data.

Founders with a proven track record:

The founding team consists of Shannon Terry, Andy Johnson, and Nana B Nyantekyi, who several years of experience working together. Between them, there have been 4 acquisitions and boast experience in the digital media, eCommerce, and tech industries.

Shannon founded Rivals.com, Popculture.com, Comicbook.com, and 247Sports, which become one of the top 10 sports properties on the internet. Rivals.com was acquired by Yahoo!, while the latter three were acquired by CBS Interactive. Andy served as the CFO of Rivals.com, 247Sports, and eCommerce startup Uncommon James. Nana was the director of business intelligence at 247Sports and also worked at CBS Interactive. He previously co-founded RightTrack Sports, a marketplace platform that uses data to connect students to university scholarships.

Your Role:

Spiny.ai is building a highly motivated and cross-functional data and engineering team. Given our size, the data scientist will work closely with the engineering and product teams to not only help with the execution but the origination of creating data-driven solutions for publishers.

You should enjoy problem-solving and have a curiosity to learn new skills and tackle unfamiliar problems. The main responsibilities include:

  • Develop recommendation systems, customer classification, topic modeling, and sentiment analysis models.
  • A keen interest in working with text data and using Natural Language Processing techniques. We work a lot with data pipelines and analytics, natural language generation (NLG).
  • Conduct analysis on business data and contribute to the origination of reporting and data storytelling for our publisher intelligence platform.
  • Develop algorithms that power our analytics and recommendations solutions.
  • Supporting your colleagues through the design, contribution, and building of models.
  • Passionate about working with large structured and unstructured data sets.
  • Familiarity with data engineering practices and creating custom data sets is a bonus.

As such, we are looking for a curious, driven, and hard-working team member with the following qualifications:

  • We use PHP, Javascript, Python, SQL.
  • Understanding of Object-Oriented Programming
  • Ability to think on your feet and prioritize what best helps to realize our vision.
  • Degree in computer science, statistics, mathematics, physics, engineering, machine learning, or similar fields.
  • Experience in relational databases required; open to NoSQL alternatives
  • Prior experience leading or working in a small team is a bonus.
  • Experience with Data Science Stack such as Pandas, Numpy, Sklearn, Matplotlib, and NLP libraries (e.g SpaCy, Hugging Face, NLTK, etc).
  • Experience with AWS a plus
  • Willingness to think critically and contribute to the decision-making process.
  • Past experience in adtech, digital publishing, or martech is a bonus.
  • Interesting side projects or Kaggle competition results are a plus.
