Position Summary

The  Technical Support Services (TSS) Activity  helps USAID/South Africa and Regional Health Office (RHO) to address technical priorities and develop creative, innovative solutions to strategically allocate resources, strengthen connections with partners, and replicate best practices and effective program models. Through the TSS contract, Panagora Group augments capacity by providing technical, operational, and administrative support to USAID’s largest health portfolio. TSS deploys advisors in response to USAID requests for priority work with government stakeholders, implementing partners, and/or other entities. TSS supports Health Office staff and teams to integrate creative solutions into routine work. TSS also provides international and local expertise for surge support, as needed, for USAID Program Cycle requirements, planning, development, outreach, communications, and Health Office human resource functions.

The Senior Data Analyst: Visualization Specialist provides data visualization support using Tableau for TSS activities implemented by Panagora South Africa.

This is a short-term position based in Pretoria, South Africa or remote.

Primary Responsibilities

The Senior Data Analyst: Visualization Specialist will support one or more of the following tasks, core activities and deliverables as listed below and as assigned by their POC based on TSS’ quarterly work plans with USAID:

  • Create and develop interactive visuals and accompanying summary interpretations using the Tableau administration and architecture [Tableau Desktop, Tableau Prep-Builder, and Tableau Server] for USAID/South Africa and RHO as aligned to Panagora’s TSS strategy.
  • Conduct preliminary reviews of datasets for integrity as necessary and transform data sets, and quantitative and qualitative analysis into compelling visuals.
  • Design, define, and develop metrics; run and interpret analytics; create interactive dashboards to answer specific questions.
  • Work with a variety of complex data sources, use advanced calculations to customize data, and use advanced features (parameters, sets, filters, and forecasting) to build a range of charts and analyze a variety of data types.
  • Find innovative solutions to visualize data with the goal of facilitating its understanding and use by team members and USAID/South Africa and RHO.
  • Participate in technical and/or coordination meetings to keep up to date on any data visualization needs.
  • Utilize innovative methods to incorporate routine programmatic data with other datasets, such as geospatial, epidemiologic, and private sector, to improve the understanding of USAID/South Africa and RHO and to support IPs to tailor and refine their package of care to clients.
  • Support the implementation of best practices within and across USAID/South Africa and RHO and support the understanding and use of data using Tableau for improved program performance.
  • Participate in communities of practice to bring the latest knowledge and resources to influence data analytics and best practices for programmatic results.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in biostatistics, public health, epidemiology, statistics, mathematics, or related; and 4 years of experience, or equivalent bachelor’s degree with 6 years of experience.
  • Strong Tableau [Tableau Desktop, Tableau Prep-Builder, and Tableau Server] experience; 5+ years of experience in building and developing dashboards required.
  • Experience in data analytic programs such as Python and/or R is advantageous.
  • Experience with USAID and/or PEPFAR programs and indicators and general knowledge of the issues concerning HIV and tuberculosis in Southern Africa.
  • Experience working with unstructured data.
  • Strong mathematics and critical thinking skills are necessary.
  • Excellent verbal and written English language skills.
  • Proven capacity to take initiative and willingness to learn new skills as needed.
  • Strong work ethic and the ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
