Purpose of the role

We are looking for a highly motivated individual who loves analysing data from multiple sources to deliver innovative analytical solutions to complex problems that directly impact the company's bottom-line.

Under the supervision of the Head of Data Science & Analytics, you will plan and execute data analysis projects to extract relevant insights from medium to large data sets. The data will in turn be used to identify optimisation opportunities in terms of identifying unserved segments, potential AB and multivariant tests, product development and product merchandising strategies applied in various online distribution channels.

Daily activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Create reports for internal and external stakeholders that can be used to make decisions;
  • Create and maintain reporting templates for internal and external audiences;
  • Provide real insights into customer purchasing behavior and find answers to business questions with pro-active recommendations influencing optimisation actions and future analytical projects;
  • Deliver data-driven insights using statistical techniques;
  • Extract data from different databases via SQL and other query languages;
  • Analyse AB test results to discover statistically significant findings;
  • Manage monitoring tools (e.g. dashboards);
  • Disseminate results internally and externally through presentations and reports;
  • Build data driven models to abstract customer behaviour using predictive modelling techniques;
  • Interpret performance and provide the appropriate narrative regarding program performance to internal and external stakeholders;
  • Interest in learning new analytics tools and techniques;
  • Assist in making data analytics a cornerstone of the company.

Desired skills, competencies and experience:


  • Relevant tertiary qualification in statistics, computer science, research or similar.


  • Creative mind to use data to solve business challenges;
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to independently collect, organise, analyse, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy;
  • Basic programming skills, particularly Python;
  • Proficiency in available data analytics tools and experience in manipulating and analysing large data sets (eg SQL, R, Python, Matlab, KNIME, Pandas, Google Data Studio, Microsoft Power BI);
  • Strong planning, organising and time management skills;
  • Advanced MS Office skills (especially MS Excel pivot tables);
  • Knowledge of and experience with data analytics tools and techniques (Predictive analytics experience/knowledge is a plus).


  • Minimal 1 year business reporting experience;
  • Ability to translate data analysis insights into actions;
  • Proven ability to complete projects and ad-hoc requests timeously and in line with requirements;
  • Experience in running statistical data analyses;
  • Experience in building predictive models, machine-learning approaches, clustering and classification techniques is a bonus;
  • Knowledge of the financial industry and/or fintech is a bonus.

As the role is based in Cape Town, there is a preference for Cape Town-based candidates. Anyone who is eligible to work in South Africa is welcome to apply. If the candidate is not South African however, it will be the candidate's responsibility to organise the necessary work visa, with support from Hepstar. The contract will be conditional on successfully obtaining the visa.
