Project management is critical to DataKind’s success—every project or event involves social impact partners, funders, and volunteer data scientists collaborating with DataKind staff to create tools and insights that maximize impact.

Reporting to the Senior Director of Product, the Project Manager (parental leave coverage) will ensure the success of key DataKind programming by managing select partner relationships and overseeing all aspects of project management. The Project Manager will set deadlines, assign responsibilities, and monitor and summarize the progress of projects while ensuring deliverables fall within the applicable scope and budget.

The Project Manager will support up to 4 projects, two for which are in Kenya, for the period of mid-July to end of November that are part of DataKind’s portfolio of work in Economic Resilience. They will be a cross-functional team member, coordinating projects and deliverables across DataKind. In this role, you’ll be part of the Product team and work closely with our Global Volunteers, Business Development, Communications, and Operations teams, as well as with our project partners.


This is a remote international position open to candidates who reside in Kenya and requires the majority of working hours each day to fall between 8am and 6pm Eastern Standard Time.

What you’ll do

The Project Manager will be responsible for the following during the course of the engagement:

Engage with partners and volunteers in DataKind’s flagship program, the DataCorps

  • Contribute to the recruitment of pro-bono volunteer teams, and support them in the from the Design stage through the Share stage, leveraging the DataKind Playbook on how to execute a data science for good project
  • Ensure volunteers have a great experience on our projects, celebrating their efforts and work throughout the project
  • Be willing to work a flexible schedule to meet on some nights or weekends with your volunteer teams or to run DataKind events
  • Consistently communicate and manage expectations of partner organizations and volunteers throughout the entire project lifecycle

Manage the successful and timely execution of projects

  • Develop project implementation plans, timelines, and tracking systems for each project and manage them to successful completion and sustainable handof
  • Meet regularly with the Product team to ensure that projects proceed according to established timelines, budgetary constraints, meeting expectations, and adherence to the project scope
  • Coordinate with internal and external team members to deliver timely grantee update reports—for example, sending report reminders, reviewing and compiling reports, and tracking submission metrics
  • Manage and update organizational records using shared resources such as Google Drive and Salesforce



  • Alignment with DataKind’s mission and values, including our commitment to anti-racism
  • 5-7 years of work experience; at least 3 years of experience in complex project management, preferably in a nonprofit or start-up context
  • Experience effectively managing internal and external stakeholder relationships as a part of project management work
  • Ability to motivate people to collaborate towards a shared goal, to keep them engaged throughout the process, and to intervene as needed
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with a track record of creating strong presentations or reports


  • Experience with stakeholders in lower-middle-income countries (LMICs)
  • Experience with Google Drive, Slack, Asana, and/or Salesforce

Compensation & Time Commitment

  • This role offers a monthly compensation of up to KES 200,000, and is based on skills and experience that are commensurate with the role. It also offers a flexible remote schedule, as well as a dynamic, exciting work environment helping to build the Data Science and AI for Good movement.
  • This is a temporary full-time role from July through the end of November 2022. Time commitment is up to 40 hours/week. Possibility of extension to the end of the 2022 calendar year
