Letter to sound file for English
Help · 13 Apr 2022, 17:22 · 4

Hello guys, I have been looking for letter to sound (pronounciation) dictionary for English so that I can use it to develop pronounciation file for my language (Chichewa) for use in developing a traditional ASR model in ELPIS. Anyone who has the Engish pronounciation file, please share it.

Thanks,

Dunstan

Hi Dunstan,

Is this what you're looking for? Here are letter-to-sound rules: https://elpis.readthedocs.io/en/latest/wiki/elpis-workshop.html#letter-to-sound-rules

The example can be downloaded from here: https://elpis.readthedocs.io/en/latest/wiki/elpis-workshop.html#letter-to-sound-rules

And direct download link: https://bit.ly/elpis-toycorpora

Hope this helps!

Hi Connie,

Thanks for the prompt reply and sharing the ELPIS documentation. The Elpis documentation isn't fully helpful unless I'm missing something. They have provided letter_to_sound.txt for Abui language and another non-eenglish language which I cant really use to create soind rules for my language. Otherwise, since I'm familiar with English language, if I had a letter_to_sound.txt for English, it could be more useful to help me use it. I have been looking online but somehow I cant quite find it.

I will use the link you provided to connect with the linguisitst. I'm sure they will be able to help.

Hi Dunstan,

Not directly related, but we have done some work on Chichewa on Zindi and with partners previously (most notably Amelia Taylor and AI4D). Check out these links:

Hi Paul,

I did know about the competition and joined but wasn't active. I wasn't aware of the blog though, I will check it out. Thanks for reaching out.
