90% of New Year’s Resolutions fail. Follow these 6 simple steps to put yourself in the 10% who succeed:
An effective goal should be aligned with the areas of your life you want to improve most. Try this: Use the Wheel of Life Exercise to evaluate the key areas you need to work on, and let that guide your goal-setting.
Remember this: A big, scary goal is just a collection of small, achievable goals. Try this: Break your yearly goals down into monthly goals. If you want, break those down into weekly goals.
Assign the daily habit for each monthly/weekly goal to move you towards it. Try this: When starting, make the habit so easy it’s nearly impossible to fail. Build the habit of showing up first, and scaling later.
A habit is MUCH more likely to happen if you have a consistent time and place established for it. Try this: Put non-negotiable habit blocks into your calendar and set reminders so you never forget.
Regular reflection helps you to learn from the past and plan for the future. Try this: Set a time each week/month to do a quick review of your goals and habits. Reflect, calibrate, and plan ahead.
Accountability turns intention into action. When someone else is aware of your goals, you're much more likely to follow through. Try this: Share your goals with a trusted friend, join a group with similar objectives, or hire a coach. Schedule regular check-ins to help you stay on track.
