This is a role for someone who brings both infrastructure talent and a human centred design instinct, and who is energised by the mission.
The mandate
StrongMinds delivers community based mental health care, mobilising volunteers to screen for depression and run a six week course of community therapy, mostly through government health systems. The organisation has effectively no digital infrastructure yet, while sitting on one of the largest mental health datasets in Africa. This is a green field build for the right person. You design, administer and own the uptime of the data warehouse, the BI layer and the field systems, build internal warehousing that feeds a usable BI structure for finance, programs, M&E, donors and ministries, and reimagine paper based workflows as digital ones, all under real data residency, governance and security constraints across a multi country footprint that is expanding fast.
What you will own
- Warehouse and BI: Architect SQL based internal infrastructure and a self service BI layer (likely Superset or Metabase), and own its uptime and administration.
- Field systems: Design data collection for low resource, low connectivity settings, working with low code platforms such as CommCare and DHIS2.
- Responsible integration: Build custom, compliant integrations and data exchange with Ministries of Health.
- Security and compliance: Own data residency, governance and federated architecture for sensitive data across countries.
- AI experimentation: Explore process and analytics automation, and field facing tools using OCR and language processing for capture, quality and bias reduction.
- Workflow redesign: Rethink frontline workflows end to end with supervisors and lay volunteers, not just digitise the existing paper.
Who we are looking for
- Senior architect with hard data engineering and infrastructure depth: warehousing, security, multi country systems
- Expertise in data warehousing and BI design
- Comfort in low resource, low connectivity field environments
- Strong design creativity (the data itself is not complex, the context is)
- Independent, full stack designer who owns administration, security and compliance Has built multi country infrastructure with a compliance angle
Signals and edge
- Social sector or startup mindset: mission driven, wears many hats, not money led
- Experience with frontline, humanitarian or government tech contexts
- Hands on with CommCare or DHIS2
- Federated architecture and compliance for sensitive data
- Healthcare background is a nice to have, not essential
