Meet the Winners of the AI Art Challenge
In recent years, art-creating AI has pushed the boundaries of how we define art. This competition challenges the African AI & Data Science community on Zindi to create original artwork and music track(s) using AI.
The challenge is to create an original piece of artwork or music that leverages AI. There will be one winner for each category (visual art & music) and winners must be citizens of an African country and must be living in Africa.
Awards will be presented to the winner at the exclusive AI Expo Africa VIP event on the opening night of AI Expo Africa in Cape Town South Africa on 3 September 2019 – with the music track(s) being played during the event and art work on display. Both works will be auctioned during the exclusive networking / drinks reception event 5 September with proceeds going (50%) to the artist and (50%) to the event charity “Starting Chance.”
This competition is sponsored by The AI Media Group, creators of AI Expo Africa, and Cortex Ventures, Africa’s first AI only focused VC company.

With each submission, you are required to submit an “artist statement” that explains the art and how you created your work. This is for judging and verification purposes. Upon acceptance of the prize, you thereby agree to assign all worldwide rights of copyright in and to such winning solution to Zindi & AI Media PTY Ltd.
Your solution must not infringe the rights of any third party and you must be legally entitled to assign ownership of all rights of copyright in and to the winning solution code to Zindi.
Competitors are currently able to register and submit solutions as individuals only. For the avoidance of doubt, individuals and their submissions originating from multiple accounts will be disqualified. However competitors can still collaborate with others and work in teams towards a submission. (We plan to enable team functionality on Zindi in the near future). If collaborating with others as a team, it will be your responsibility to designate one person to submit your team’s solution on your team’s behalf. Prizes are transferred only to the individual user that submitted the winning solution.
Multiple accounts per user are not allowed and neither is collaboration nor membership across multiple teams.
The solution must use publicly-available, open-source packages only.
To be eligible for this competition you must register for this competition on Zindi. You must upload your submission to the competition leaderboard. Note that there will be no scores on this leaderboard. We will judge you on only one submission per category (music and visual art). Both can be submitted to the same leaderboard. If you make multiple submissions, you will be judged on only the most recent submission per category.
Upon the close of this competition, the judging panel will score your art according to the evaluation criteria. The panel’s determination is final. Winners will be announced within 10 working days of the competition close.
If you choose to decline or are otherwise unable to accept the prize of travel and tickets to AI Expo in Cape Town on 3-5 September 2019, you will not be eligible to win this competition.
