I will love to thank Zindi and predictive insight for this great opportunity, but I will love to make some point about the prize that is only valid to South African resident. The cons:
1. Low turn out of participants on pushing hard, imagine gaining the top 3 but the condition of not been a South Africa resident makes you not eligible for prize, then I am sure a lot of people will not put effort.
Advice
It will be better if Zindi, make some arrangements with the host that those that will be eligible for prize must have at least a South African resident, I think that will bring inclusiveness and mitigate the bias of low turn rate on the competition.
Best regards, Nasirudeen
Thanks Nasirudeen for those comments which make a lot of sense. At Predictive Insights we thought long and hard about putting in place this condition.
We (reluctantly) went for it for one main reason. For us, this is not only a mechanism to get people to think about the challenge of youth employment, but importantly a way we can recruit entry-level data scientists and interns to work with us.
Most people at Predictive Insights work remotely but we do bring the team together every few months. As a small start-up we just cannot afford to bring a team together that is not primarily based in South Africa.
How about making the job interview prize location-specific and the money prize open to all?
That way you still get to recruit entry-level data scientist in South Africa whiles increasing participation and the likelihood of gaining higher quality models
Hmmm..... and what if a non South Africa person wins the challenge that means he can't get the prize and have opportunity for a job interview at predictive insight?
Yes great, thanks for the swift reply. That is great.
I think the method of separating the prize and recruitment is something that is applicable.
I agree to this
These are all great suggestions and discussions, which we will need to think about. This is our first time hosting a competition on Zindi, so we are learning too.
